How I Got Started at China Hand

It doesn't seem possible that a little more than 4-1/2 years have gone by since I walked through the door of China Hand and into, what has become for me, an exciting, joyous and, I hope, life-long, kung fu adventure.  In 2006, I was going to China where I knew the people there did tai chi.  I wanted to be able to participate with them and so began attending tai chi classes.  Shifu is, without a doubt, the most patient teacher I know and, by the time I left for my trip that September, I was able to do the 64-movement tai chi Long Form (not well, but in a recognizable fashion) in parks throughout the month I was in China.  It was an interesting experience which frequently attracted attention:  A blonde, blue-eyed woman doing something so essentially Chinese.  What was so great was the fact that the folks who noticed invariably stopped to talk to me and were unfailingly kind and very encouraging.  To say the least, it was a wonderful way to encounter another culture.

Now, 4-1/2 years later, I'm still doing tai chi and weapons (and beginning to teach), and have branched out into Shaolin, Hsing Yi and Pa Kua.  It continues to be an incredibly joyful journey -- thanks to Shifu and the great friends I've found at the Academy.

Teaching Tips:

In the years I have been teaching, I have learned many ways to present material to meet the audience and thier needs.  So,  will share my incites and hopefully others will too...

One this that I have found very useful and successful is breaking movements down to hand movements and foot movements.  Teaching each separately then combining them back together has not only proved to be easier for the students to learn an entire movement faster, but movement movements in a shorter period of time.

Have you had positive results from doing Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Pa Kua, Hsing Yi, Qigong?   I know I have.  The results are astonising too when I think about it.  Over the years, I have had so many things happen and have never really thought about it, but now, I want to share it.

Being a lefty and not so inclined to being athletic, I was a little uncoordinated.  One of the first things I noticed that my coordination was improving.  Without any thought, I would catch something that was falling.  For example, my razor falling out of the medicine cabinet or the soap shooting out of my hand while showering and catching it with the free hand.

I would just put my hand out and it would land in my palm.  Almost in slow motion.  Without thought, nervousness, or fear.  This has persisted now for 27 years.

Do you have a comment?   Please share your story...

Thanks Shifu
